Immigration statistics in Korea count different populations depending on the ministry and the survey. The names are similar and the counts differ widely.
| Definition | Population counted | Published by |
|---|---|---|
| Registered foreigners | People staying more than 90 days who have completed foreign registration | MOJ Statistical Yearbook |
| Staying foreigners | Registered foreigners plus short-term visitors | MOJ Statistical Yearbook |
| Foreigners without status | People counted as staying without a status of stay | MOJ Statistical Yearbook |
| Foreign residents | Includes people who acquired Korean nationality and their children | MOIS Status of Foreign Residents |
Note: The four definitions contain or overlap one another. Table 1 on the home page gives the four counts with their years and coverage. The default definition is registered foreigners, and any table on another basis names that basis in the source line.
The registered foreigners of a district divided by the population in Resident Registration Population Statistics. The denominator is the resident-registration population rather than Korean nationals alone, so the share rises from both directions when the foreign population grows and the Korean population falls.
A Shannon index of how evenly nationalities are mixed. A higher value means several nationalities of similar size, and a lower value means concentration in one or two nationalities. It is calculated on a base reduced to the top 19 nationalities plus other so that years stay comparable.
How many times more concentrated a nationality is in a district than in the country as a whole.
An index of dissimilarity for how differently one nationality is spread across districts compared with Koreans. 0 means the two distributions are identical and 1 means they are fully separate. Half of the value is the share of people who would have to move to make the two distributions identical(Massey and Denton, 1988).
A Theil information index that measures how far nationalities are divided across regions, with Koreans and all nationalities entered at once. It is the share of national diversity that between-region differences account for, and 0 means every region has the same composition(Reardon and Firebaugh, 2002).
A district is classified as an ethnic enclave when one nationality has a location quotient of 2 or more, accounts for 30% or more of the foreigners in that district, and numbers more than 200 people. The location quotient alone picks up nationalities that are rare nationwide even in small clusters, and the share alone picks up districts with few foreigners.
The number of support organizations in a district divided by its registered foreigners, expressed per 10,000. The list carries nothing about how much ground or how many staff one organization covers. District values are in Organization density by district.

Note: The code used for the calculations is in the repository pipeline.
Note: The year range differs by indicator. Provinces start in 2006, districts in 2008, and sub-districts in 2014. The years used on each page are in the source line.
1,893 organizations support immigrants. 1,412 list a telephone number, 1,785 have an address, 1,129 have a confirmed website and 993 have a confirmed social media account.
Collected from 41 rosters, then de-duplicated by name, address and phone number. The 12 rosters with the most organizations are listed.
The rest come from provincial education office multicultural education support centers, organizations for youth with migration backgrounds, multicultural libraries, migrant communities, bodies under the Overseas Koreans Agency, and the National Tax Service register of public-interest corporations. How many organizations each register holds and how many of them were taken is in the repository crosswalk table.
Five searches were run for each organization and every candidate page was opened, and a website is listed only where the page carries the organization’s phone number or street address alongside its name. Pages that merely share a similar name, map services, business directory lookups and roster pages are not the organization’s website and were left blank.
