Seoul Jongno-gu

Registered foreigners in Seoul Jongno-gu number 11,765, which is 8.58% of the resident-registration population of 137,048. That is above both the national average of 3.14% and the Seoul average of 3.01%. It ranks 11 among the 250 districts. Within Seoul it ranks 2 of 25. Over the past 10 years, registered foreigners rose from 8,836 in 2015 to 11,765, an increase of about 33.1%. 117 nationalities are counted, and the three largest are China at 33.7%, Vietnam at 16.1%, and Nepal at 11.6%. Shannon diversity (H) is 2.028, below the national 2.607, and ranks 204 of 250 districts. Within Seoul it ranks 21. By continent of origin, diversity is 0.24, above the national 0.123. It ranks 26 of 250 districts. East Asia accounts for 45.9% and Southeast Asia for 17.9%, and the two together are 63.8%. The location quotient (LQ) for China is 6.5, and this one nationality is 33.7% of the foreigners in the district. Language demand estimated from the nationality composition is highest for Chinese, then Vietnamese, then English.

Foreign residents (MOIS) numbered 13,429 in 2024, which is 9.3% of the resident-registration population of 144,486. Of these, 12,309 do not hold Republic of Korea nationality, 538 have acquired nationality, and 582 are children of foreign residents. By type, International studentss number 5,281, other foreigners 3,876, overseas Koreans with foreign nationality 1,678, and foreign workers 828. Children of foreign residents number 582, which ranks 180 among 252 districts and is 4.3% of foreign residents in this district. Among the 11,765 people with a known status of stay, the most common are Student (D2) with 5,011 people at 42.6%, General Trainee (D4) with 1,130 at 9.6%, and Permanent Residence (F5) with 699 at 5.9%. Organizations that support immigrants number 29 in this district, or 24.6 per 10,000 registered foreigners.
