Seoul Dongjak-gu

Registered foreigners in Seoul Dongjak-gu number 12,357, which is 3.32% of the resident-registration population of 371,924. That is above both the national average of 3.14% and the Seoul average of 3.01%. It ranks 95 among the 250 districts. Within Seoul it ranks 12 of 25. Over the past 10 years, registered foreigners rose from 12,133 in 2015 to 12,357, an increase of about 1.8%. 117 nationalities are counted, and the three largest are China at 24.1%, Vietnam at 23.4%, and Korean-Chinese at 23%. Shannon diversity (H) is 2.032, below the national 2.607, and ranks 201 of 250 districts. Within Seoul it ranks 19. By continent of origin, diversity is 0.093, below the national 0.123. It ranks 153 of 250 districts. East Asia accounts for 54.3% and Southeast Asia for 27.9%, and the two together are 82.2%. Language demand estimated from the nationality composition is highest for Chinese, then Vietnamese, then Japanese.

Foreign residents (MOIS) numbered 19,200 in 2024, which is 5% of the resident-registration population of 381,172. Of these, 16,422 do not hold Republic of Korea nationality, 1,680 have acquired nationality, and 1,098 are children of foreign residents. By type, International studentss number 4,923, other foreigners 4,760, overseas Koreans with foreign nationality 4,392, and foreign workers 1,302. Children of foreign residents number 1,098, which ranks 117 among 252 districts and is 5.7% of foreign residents in this district. Among the 12,357 people with a known status of stay, the most common are Student (D2) with 4,227 people at 34.2%, Permanent Residence (F5) with 2,113 at 17.1%, and General Trainee (D4) with 1,862 at 15.1%. Organizations that support immigrants number 10 in this district, or 8.1 per 10,000 registered foreigners.
