Gwangju Dong-gu

Registered foreigners in Gwangju Dong-gu number 1,930, which is 1.84% of the resident-registration population of 104,888. That is below both the national average of 3.14% and the Gwangju average of 2.04%. It ranks 171 among the 250 districts. Within Gwangju it ranks 2 of 5. Over the past 10 years, registered foreigners rose from 1,109 in 2015 to 1,930, an increase of about 74%. 54 nationalities are counted, and the three largest are Vietnam at 40.5%, China at 12.5%, and Mongolia at 10.3%. Shannon diversity (H) is 2.181, below the national 2.607, and ranks 164 of 250 districts. Within Gwangju it ranks 4. By continent of origin, diversity is 0.083, below the national 0.123. It ranks 170 of 250 districts. Southeast Asia accounts for 48.4% and East Asia for 28.5%, and the two together are 76.9%. Language demand estimated from the nationality composition is highest for Vietnamese, then Chinese, then Mongolian.

Foreign residents (MOIS) numbered 2,963 in 2024, which is 2.7% of the resident-registration population of 111,289. Of these, 2,442 do not hold Republic of Korea nationality, 151 have acquired nationality, and 370 are children of foreign residents. By type, other foreigners number 950, International studentss 903, foreign workers 312, and Marriage migrants 176. Children of foreign residents number 370, which ranks 213 among 252 districts and is 12.5% of foreign residents in this district. Among the 1,930 people with a known status of stay, the most common are Student (D2) with 726 people at 37.6%, General Trainee (D4) with 413 at 21.4%, and Marriage Migration (F6) with 152 at 7.9%. Organizations that support immigrants number 18 in this district, or 93.3 per 10,000 registered foreigners.
